Aliens: Dark Descent, an upcoming isometric strategy and action game from developer Tindalos Interactive and publisher Focus Entertainment, will officially launch on June 20th, 2023. It will be available on PC, as well as both current and last gen consoles for PlayStation and Xbox users. Here’s the full, exclusive release date trailer:
Aliens remains one of the most beloved films in either action or horror, though it was certainly the former that invited so many game adaptations featuring marines. While most have struggled, Aliens: Fireteam Elite was a fairly successful spin on the Left 4 Dead formula.
However, it also focused heavily on brisk, cooperative shootouts and relentless hordes of xenomorphs. Aliens: Dark Descent will be a single-player experience, which should create more tension. Although, it could hardly be expected to live up to Alien: Isolation, which was arguably better than most sequels in the film series.
One of the most compelling things about the xenomorph has been the evolution of its mythology and nature. Aside from its brilliant design, one of the most frightening aspects of the titular alien is that its behavior and form are constantly changing in unexpected ways.
So, Aliens: Dark Descent is also a welcome change of pace, even if it plays against expectations. Ideally, it will delve into more story-based content, as suggested by the volume of cinematics released thus far.
The isometric presentation is traditionally reserved for turn-based combat. Real-time action could feel disappointing for players who wanted more strategy, and frustrate casual players who wanted more of a shooter. But real-time could also emphasize the overall sense of urgency and force some quick decisions for survival.
Either way, the art design really nails the dingy and industrial feel of the Alien universe, and the basic premise remembers to pit humans against each other too.
