Aliens: Dark Descent, an upcoming action RTS game based on the hit IP from Tindalos Interactive and Focus Entertainment, has just released a new story trailer. It features a variety of new cinematic footage, as well as glimpses of gameplay.
Aliens: Dark Descent is slated to launch next week on June 20th, 2023. It will be available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4 and 5, or Xbox One and Series X|S. Pre-orders are available through June 19th. You can watch today’s new story trailer on the Focus Entertainment YouTube channel:
Aliens: Dark Descent has felt a lot of resentment simply for its genre. RTS action doesn’t have as much punch as an immersive third or first-person experience, since players are in control of full squads. It may also miss out on the horror of Alien: Isolation, where roaming AI kept players on their toes, and mostly defenseless without a flamethrower.
But Aliens: Dark Descent does promise to succeed as an RTS game, and fans of the franchise are always willing to indulge some new lore. Even when the mythology doesn’t necessarily work, it is reliably fun to discover new interpretations of the xenomorph, including new species and environments for them.
Today’s story teaser has a lot of familiar beats, such as another corporate villain willing to sacrifice people for a bottom line, and even a robot that references HAL 9000’s iconic line. But there are still some dazzling cinematics, full of action, claustrophobia, and effective lighting that reinforces horror.
There are also a few sub-plots introduced here, and the reveal of a bizarre antagonist who is either leading the xenomorphs or at least unbothered by them.
Revealing more story was the only way to potentially win over those uninterested in an RTS approach, and it may be enough for casual players.
