Fans of the classic action-horror film Aliens rejoice, as a new video game spinoff Dark Descent just received its first cinematic trailer during Summer Game Fest 2022.
You can watch the complete trailer on YouTube here:
Aliens: Fireteam Elite was a fun clone of Left 4 Dead, but it also carried over many of the same issues. Also, the budget wasn’t quite there, and neither was the horror of Alien: Isolation, which truly made the xenomorph properly terrifying.
However, some fans are disappointed that new gameplay footage reveals that the game will be an isometric team shooter. While the genre remains popular, it might feel like a step down from Fireteam Elite’s immersion and sheer intensity.
Dark Descent trailer breakdown
The trailer begins with solemn narration that could have belonged to any science-fiction title, but sharp-eyed fans might have instantly recognized the vehicle in the opening images.
If not, the weapons and gear quickly give it away, especially with that unmistakable audio cue of the motion tracker from the 1986 film.
The dark, brooding facilities and red lighting have the perfect cinematography to create tension. The tone is definitely on point compared to earlier failures like Colonial Marines.
The remaining Sergeant explains that his mission was to enter a base and bring the communications back online, until the xenomorphs showed up.
Although he appears to be interrogated at first, it’s revealed that the Sergeant is only recording the message in order to reveal the truth for anyone to hear. Players will likely have to avoid xenomorphs in order to continue the comms mission, escape, and expose the facts.
Hopefully, the xenomorphs will feel like a genuine threat, because the original Aliens film definitely succeeds in balancing terror with gunplay.
