Alone in the Dark, Pieces Interactive’s reimagining of the 90’s horror classic, has just pushed its release date to January 16th, 2024, according to a new post from the official Twitter feed.
The post suggests that the devs were hoping to avoid “a month as busy as October”, and to make sure that fans would have a “breathtaking experience” at launch.
Alone in the Dark will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders are available now, and there will be a collector’s edition featuring a Dark Man statue, steelbook and more.
Most recently, a pair of spotlight trailers showcased both of the protagonists, who feature the performances and likeness of actors like Jodie Comer. You can watch the Emily Hartwood teaser on the THQ Nordic YouTube channel:
Fans of the beloved horror franchise will likely be disappointed that Alone in the Dark won’t be able to release around the Halloween season, which would surely be more thematic than January.
But fans have also widely agreed that the sudden delay was a strategic and sound decision to make, given the massive titles arriving in October. Fans will have more time and finances to invest in the newest installment properly.
It should also give the creative team an opportunity to polish the game. While today’s post suggests the devs still intend to refine some things in pursuit of a “breathtaking” release, it isn’t clear which exact features could be improved.
It was a clever marketing twist, to rephrase the context of Alone in the Dark’s new launch as eerie solitude. In the film industry, January is often a month reserved for forgettable horror films. But this Alone in the Dark reimagining should prove to avoid such pitfalls. Its existing trailers promise some neat reinventions for the franchise, very sharp performances, and creative horror imagery.
