CD Projekt Red has released an update for The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings that adds support for Apple silicon M1 and M2 chips, and macOS Ventura. This means that anyone with a Mac running macOS 11.0 or later can now enjoy the game. Previously, you needed the older software to play The Witcher 2.
To support Apple silicon chips, CD Projekt Red published a post on Steam to show the minimum macOS requirement for The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings is now macOS 11.0. This means that support for OS X 10.7.5, OS X 10.8.2, and macOS 10.15 has been discontinued. Losing the functionality for older models is necessary when improving to the latest Mac version.
Before discontinuing service for older models, the developers provided users with a month’s notice in advance. This way, it wouldn’t come as a surprise for anyone who has chosen not to update their Mac. The developers have said this about removing support for older Macs:
“… the technology we are using, the JIT-compatible memory management and Apple’s Game Controller framework, require a minimum version of macOS 11.0. These updates are necessary to provide support to Apple silicon chips.”
If you are still using a Mac running an older version of macOS, you can continue to play the old version of The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings. To do this, you will need to disable automatic updates on Steam or GOG. On the App Store, no action is necessary. If you have uninstalled the game, the latest update will be the only one available to install. However, on GOG, it is possible to roll back to an earlier version.
This is great news because this update will likely come with some improvements to the game. Also, those of us who like having our Macs updated would needlessly miss out on this game because of it.
