Apex Legends, Respawn’s FTP battle royale, has revealed a new gameplay and cinematic trailer for the upcoming Threat Level event, which rolls out on May 23rd, 2023.

The new event will feature two straight weeks of Control mode, as voted by the fans. Further, TDM Unshielded will join the Mixtape playlist for a limited time, and cosmic-themed cosmetics will be available. You can watch today’s full event trailer on the Apex Legends YouTube channel:

It’s a bit of a surprise that Control mode ended up winning the fan vote. It isn’t nearly as competitive or grindy as Team Deathmatch and Gun Run. In fact, those are the only modes where you can basically play your own life, although you’re probably less likely to end up with a good performance.

In Control mode, teams really do have to coordinate with each other. It’s hardly battle royale, but there is some strategy involved. Using Pathfinders and Octanes to close the distance quickly, and paying attention for a push to Base C, are crucial fundamentals that many players just don’t follow.

But Control still has many of the same flaws that it did when introduced. Hopefully, these will be smoothed out sometime, as it’s proven itself to be the most popular current mode, at least for Threat Level. For example, basic matchmaking problems can easily result in spawn killing, and there aren’t many maps to play on either.

It’s a delight to see that TDM Unshielded will be added to the Mixtape. This means that Deadeye was successful enough to warrant a return, and the Mixtape could always use some more content, even in a limited capacity. Unshielded is best reserved for skilled players though, as it really punishes newcomers’ lesser aim and communication.
