Apex Legends, the free-to-play battle royale shooter from Respawn Entertainment, has released a new trailer for the upcoming “Celestial Sunrise” collection event. Despite an emphasis on cosmetics celebrating the new Year of the Rabbit, this event will also feature a fresh LTM, Hardcore Royale.

Celestial Sunrise will roll out on January 24th, 2023. Here’s the full trailer from Apex Legends’ YouTube channel:

Apex Legends receives a lot of justified criticism for its ridiculous cosmetic prices, and news about the heirloom recolors really frustrated the fans. But there’s no denying that some of their cosmetics are pretty inspired, and the cultural influences for Octane and Pathfinder are both gorgeous and finely detailed. The game also continues to boast some of the most inclusive content in any genre.

Octane was a natural thematic fit for the rabbit, so even the devs couldn’t miss that matchup. New cosmetics can often feel misplaced. Horizon’s Spellbound outfit that seems to be a knock-off of Marvel’s Scarlet Witch should’ve gone to Catalyst. The best example is arguably the anime skins, most of which didn’t seem to line up with their characters.

Either way, Celestial Sunrise does mark the most content that fans have gotten in some time. It’s actually delivering a new LTM, which feels practically unheard of lately. Even the return of Control mode didn’t add any new maps to play on.

Hardcore Royale may only make the game even more inaccessible for those who generally dislike BR, but small changes like removing armor swaps will definitely be a fun challenge for longtime players.

The limited HUD should help balance out the lack of EVO armor or helmets, but Hardcore Royale best resembles Armed and Dangerous, where your TTK is dramatically reduced. Also, there won’t be any armor swaps in the loot pool for quick-witted clutches. While it’s a fun experiment, Hardcore Royale may also highlight just how broken matchmaking can be.
