Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider, a retro side-scrolling platformer from hit indie developers JoyMasher, will officially get physical editions according to publisher The Arcade Crew. A release window was not announced, but more news will be “dropped soon”. If the next update doesn’t include a release date, it should at least reveal the physical components.
Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider announced in December that it would launch later this week on January 12th, 2023. It’ll be available on PC, PlayStation, and the Nintendo Switch. Here is today’s the announcement tweet from The Arcade Crew:
JoyMasher is likely best known for their run-and-gun indie hit Blazing Chrome, which received unanimous praise for its ability to blend classic sensibilities with modern mechanics and ideas. Judging by all of the stellar trailers released so far, it seems that Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider promises to deliver yet another gem.
The indie scene is inundated with retro love letters, so it’s always a delight when developers remember that nostalgia isn’t enough. Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider has a familiar art design and gameplay loop, but the worldbuilding and tone stand on their own.
Given the wild setting and characters, physical editions for Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider could include all sorts of treats. Generally speaking, physical editions will add obligatory art cards and the like. But there is a clear opportunity to provide a soundtrack, since music is often key for an immersive retro experience.
Further, games like Cuphead invested in a full puppet and other collectibles for their physical edition. Either way, retro titles don’t necessarily need the works, since having a case to proudly display is more than satisfying enough to relive old school gaming. It’ll be a joy to find out what artwork they decide on, with so many environments, heroes and enemies to choose from.
