Despite the hope of many playing Xbox Series X|S, Baldur’s Gate 3 will not be coming to Game Pass. Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke has decisively ended any rumors and confirmed it will not be on the service. The studio was dedicated to creating a complete, standalone experience without microtransactions.

According to IGN, to Larian, it was about delivering a narrative journey with a clear beginning, middle, and end for which you pay a premium price. They had no intention of associating with subscription services and didn’t feel they needed to.

“We made a big game, so I think there’s a fair price to be paid for that, and I think that that is okay. We don’t charge you any micro-transactions on top of it, so you get what you pay for. Upfront it’s a big meaty game. So I think that should be able to exist as it is. This is what allows us to continue making other games.”

Vincke also acknowledges the colossal playtime of Baldur’s Gate 3. The $70 price tag is justified by the game’s expansive content, potentially exceeding 120 hours for many players. Giving it away for a $15 monthly subscription fee doesn’t seem fair.

There is also more to it because Larian doesn’t get a piece of the subscription. It is likely a lot like PlayStation’s deal with owners, as described by the developers of Rocket League. A developer agrees to take a set fee given by the subscription service’s owner, and the owner puts it on their service. The developer benefits from marketing and has made their money.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has all the marketing it needs; it’s widely known as one of the best games ever made. It also doesn’t lack in sales, especially since winning Game of The Year this year. The deal wouldn’t benefit them, and they’re making money just fine. So, since the studio founder confirmed it, we’ll definitely not see it on Game Pass anytime soon.
