The imminent release of Season 03 Reloaded for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 has been stirring up anticipation within the gaming community. Recently revealed patch notes indicate that one of the major changes in this update pertains to the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), which are set to undergo a significant transformation.

Notably, the ping of a UAV will now solely emit from the player who activates the killstreak. This change marks a departure from the previous system where players could spread out and call a UAV to gain information. With the new changes, only the activator of the UAV will receive the maximum information, as they serve as the anchor.

However, if the player who initiates the UAV is eliminated, the UAV will continue to function until its intended completion. Moreover, the activation of three UAVs will still upgrade the signal into an Advanced UAV, maintaining some elements of the original system.

These changes come as UAVs have been made available in all Buy Stations, and the developers aim to ensure balance across different gameplay modes. The intention is to make the UAV system as equally balanced for solo players as it is for quads. By tying the killstreak to the player who initiates it, developers hope to maintain a predictable and fair radius coverage across all modes whenever a player hears the warning, “Enemy UAV Overhead.”

Here’s the exact details from the patch notes on the change:

All Maps | All Modes

  • UAV
    • UAV pings will now only emit from the Player who activated the Killstreak.
    • If the Player who activated the UAV is killed, the UAV will finish.
    • Using 3 UAVs will still upgrade the signal into an Advanced UAV.

With UAVs now being available in all Buy Stations, we wanted to better balance their power so that they are as equally balanced for Solo’s as they are through Quads. We felt that, like all Killstreaks, the Killstreak should come from the Player who calls it in so when players hear “Enemy UAV Overhead”, they know that the total radius covered is of a fixed, known quantity across all modes.

However, the UAV isn’t the only aspect of gameplay affected by the upcoming update. The Mortar Strike feature is also set to experience a change, with a 25% decrease in the number of missiles dropped. Additionally, the ability to ping enemies through smoke or water, known as obstructed pings, has been disabled.
