Publisher Devolver Digital has announced that Bleak Sword, their dark fantasy 8-bit hit on Apple Arcade, is finally coming to PC and the Nintendo Switch in the form of Bleak Sword DX. A release window has not been confirmed yet.

The port will include all of the original chapters and DLC, completely new game modes, and various improvements for quality of life. Here’s the full trailer from Devolver Digital’s official YouTube channel:

Bleak Sword was an instant classic that managed to make the most of its platform and subvert it all at once. Both mechanically and visually, Bleak Sword uses simplicity to its advantage.

The art design is remarkably stylish, opting for an 8-bit look while offering instantly recognizable worlds and characters. It also happens to include a lot of Devolver Digital’s red and white theme, as if the logo were transformed into a rampant game in and of itself.

It’s a delight to see that Bleak Sword DX will bring the game to wider audiences, and it was a safe bet to go with a Nintendo Switch launch, besides PC. The mobile gaming aspect and visual demands of a Switch are more applicable for an Apple Arcade port.

There will be three new game modes as an incentive for long time fans, which is nice given that Bleak Sword launched years ago. According to the new Steam page, there will also be some “new level and enemy layouts” to help shake things up.

Devolver Digital continues to try out mobile games with titles like Devolver Tumble Time, but developer more8bit really made something special with Bleak Sword DX. Hopefully the broader launch will help them venture into something new.
