Borderlands Games Chronological Order
Playing the Borderlands games in order of release isn’t the best way to experience the story. The series has a rich and interesting story, continued through each mainline installment and even some of the DLCs. To experience the story as it evolves over the lives of its protagonists, You should play the games in chronological order.

- Borderlands – Every story has a beginning, and for this one it’s Borderlands. The original Borderlands sets the foundations for the series and introduces us to the original vault hunters, who will play their parts in the story to it’s very end.
- Borderlands The Pre-Sequel! – The Pre-Sequel is actually a prequel to Borderlands 2, filling us in on the lives of the original vault hunters before Borderlands 2 and setting up many of the main antagonists to come in original sequel.
- Claptrap’s Claptastic Voyage – This Pre-Sequel DLC tells the story of the destruction of the Claptrap model line, and explains how he came to join the cast in Borderlands 2.
- Borderlands 2 – The sequel to Borderlands and widely considered to be the best game in the series, Borderlands 2 continues an incredibly rich story that will define the majority of the series.
- Tiny Tina’s Assault On Dragon Keep – Of all the DLC in Borderlands 2, this one is arguably the most important story-wise. It’s a subtle exploration of grief following the loss of a beloved character, and is the first piece of Borderlands media to confirm that the DLC characters Krieg and Gaige are canon to the story.
- Tales From The Borderlands – This Tell-Tales games series became an instant hit with fans of the games’ story and establishes much of what’s to follow.
- Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands – Given Tina’s age in Borderlands 3, it can safely be said that this game takes place before the events of the third game. It’s unclear how much of the game’s story will effect Borderlands as a whole, but we can be sure of where it exists on the timeline.
- Borderlands 3 – The last game of the series chronologically, at least at the moment. Borderlands 3 wraps up the story of many of Borderlands’ original characters, and sets the stage for a new generation of vault hunters.
