The developers behind the upcoming Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons remake have shared their approach to bringing back the 2013 classic while preserving its beloved qualities. Released almost a decade ago, the game had a unique single-player experience of controlling two brothers simultaneously as you learn their story. Making it today would mean keeping that distinct gameplay style but also adding new features.
The core philosophy guiding the remake is “enhancement, not distortion,” according to the developers (Thanks Xbox Wire). They meticulously studied the original, recognizing that every element served a specific purpose in supporting the narrative. Their focus was on modernizing the experience while retaining the essence of what made the original special.
Key areas of improvement include the control scheme, aiming for a seamless and responsive feel. Character animations have been completely redone for precise movement and smooth transitions. Puzzle and enemy AI have also been modified to the improved AI we see in games today.
“For the remake, we put in a lot of effort on perfecting the character controls for a seamless, elevated experience. Controller inputs are more responsive than the original, and animations have been remade from scratch for precise movement and transition between actions. For example, when the older brother helps the younger brother climb a ledge, it’s seamless and smooth with each brother affecting the other. And that’s just one of hundreds of interactions we’ve worked to perfect.”

The remake uses the Unreal 5 engine, so it’s obviously going to look amazing. From the brothers’ idyllic village to treacherous mountains and dark caves, the environments have been recreated with enhanced lighting, depth of field effects, and camera positioning. This is why Unreal Engine 5 is becoming the standard, and the developers assured everyone that they utilized the engine to make the game much better.
It sounds like the game is a remake in every way that players would want. It gives new features without taking away those that made the game special. If you were ever interested in the game, this remake may be the time to start playing.
