Call of Duty Reportedly Reason There’s No Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 Remake

Activision reportedly rejected a pitch for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 remakes in favor of having Vicarious Visions work on the Call of Duty franchise.

The highly praised remakes of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 revived fans’ passion for the classic skateboarding games. However, there won’t be a similar treatment for the third and fourth installments. A recent report claims that Activision turned down a proposal for a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 remake collection and assigned developer Vicarious Visions to work on the Call of Duty series instead.

Video game historian Liam Robertson supposedly recently reported that sources from Vicarious Visions have stated the success of THPS 1 + 2 has led to a proposal for a second remake collection (VGC reports). Initially, the plan for the first remake project was to include all four of the original games. However, due to time constraints, the focus was solely on the first two titles. The idea of continuing with 3 + 4 remains a possibility.

“We settled on adding some handling features from the later games to reflect the way people remember the old Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games. The improvements from 3 seemed to bleed into people’s memories of the first 2… Eventually it became clear that we didn’t have time for more than 1 + 2, so the idea that we’d continue on and release 3+4 in some fashion was on the table.”

Despite the big success of THPS 1 + 2, Activision reportedly said no to making a 3 + 4 remake. They want Vicarious Visions to concentrate on supporting their top game, Call of Duty. Vicarious Visions also helped make the Diablo 2 remake.

In line with Tony Hawk’s previous comments, the skateboarding icon announced in 2022 that there were plans for a second remake collection until Vicarious Visions fully integrated into Activision. According to Hawk, Activision had been seeking a team to develop remakes of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skaters 3 and 4. Still, it could not find a suitable replacement for Vicarious Visions, whom they trusted with the project.

Tony Hawk recently mentioned his hope for remakes of THPS 3 + 4 in the future, but the fate of the project seems to be up in the air. It seems that Activision’s focus on the Call of Duty franchise may have stopped the development of a potential Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 remake collection. We’ll see if it comes to life again.
