Call of Duty: Vanguard is pressing forward with the new map “Desolation” for its upcoming season, and a new blog post has elaborated on some of its core features.

Here’s the official tweet from Call of Duty’s feed, which promptly explains that Desolation will have a maze-like layout that encourages players to keep things up close and personal:

Call of Duty: Vanguard was never the commercial success that the devs or fans hoped it would be, but the multiplayer side of things has continued to be satisfying enough. The “Mercenaries of Fortune Reloaded” update with the new Desolation map will launch in just a few days on July 27th, 2022.

According to the official blog from Call of Duty, Desolation will still be a medium-sized map despite its twisty design. This should help increase close quarter firefights without letting the pacing get out of hand.

Overall, most of the buzz words in the blog refer to cramped spaces that limit your lines of sight, making it easier to converge on enemies without being spotted.

As a result, fans quickly became concerned about the weapon balancing and camping tactics. It’ll be ridiculously easy to spam shotguns. Enemies could be more likely to sit around and wait to ambush you, without any real incentive to attain clear points of interest.

The devs included a tip about using some open side lanes to avoid the labyrinth core of the map, and there’s been a clear emphasis on climbing. This is intended to open up the map, but most of the tips here are fundamental to any layout.

Desolation will likely be a divisive addition to an already troubled game, which is surely shadowed by the upcoming release of Modern Warfare II, which had a potential new mode leaked earlier this month.
