Starfield is a vast universe with countless planets to explore, yet many players, instead of pondering about space, are finding themselves wondering if they can romance multiple characters. What happens if you make someone fall for you, but then someone more interesting comes along? No one likes being a triangle or a third wheel.

So, can you romance multiple characters in Starfield? Or do problems arise with flirting with others?

Starfield – Can You Romance Multiple Characters

In Starfield, the possibility of romancing multiple characters does exist, but it’s not as straightforward as one might hope. Starfield requires a more time-consuming and faithful approach. I’ll put it this way: until you get to the dating stage and doing their missions, you are free to flirt with everyone and keep everyone on the hook, but once you get to dating or past it, is when problems with the other half will occur if you start flirting with others.

Building a romantic relationship with a companion can span an entire playthrough. This isn’t Baldur’s Gate 3, where characters are open to relationships from the get-go.

Relationships in Starfield progress through four distinct stages:

  1. Companion: This is the default stage when you first meet a character.
  2. Friend: As you interact more, the bond strengthens, and companions become friends.
  3. Ally (Dating): This stage signifies a deeper connection, almost akin to dating.
  4. Committed Partner (Married): The pinnacle of a relationship, where two characters decide to spend their lives together.

From my experience, flirting and building rapport with companions is relatively risk-free until you embark on their specific relationship missions. Completing these missions and choosing the “[Romance]” option signifies a deep commitment to that particular companion. After this point, venturing into romantic interactions with another character can lead to tensions and potential conflicts.

I want to note that taking a relationship to the next level is time-consuming. It’s not like, not one date, then wanna come over? It’s over 40 hours of making your partner happy and making decisions that align with them to get to the romancing stage.

Are There Polyamory Relationships in Starfield?

Based on my over 40 hours of gameplay and exploration, it appears that Starfield does not support polyamorous relationships. Given the significant effort required to romance even one character, the absence of a poly option seems consistent with the game’s design. If a player, after committing to one character, starts to show interest in another, their initial partner will not hesitate to voice their concerns. While ending a relationship to pursue another character is an option, no clear path allows for polyamorous relationships.
