Daedelic Entertainment has had a rough couple of months after the release of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was critically panned. It seems that the developer has taken this to heart and is planning to move to publishing only, halting all currently planned or in-development games, including another rumored LOTR title.
As reported by the German gaming website GamesWirtschaft, 25 of the company’s 90 employees were affected by this new direction. However, Daedelic has committed to finding them new work opportunities within the company’s network, even if it’s no longer developing games internally.
One issue with this is that the company has previously requested funds from the Ministry of Economics, which were approved. The government organization has been informed, but there’s no news on how or if this will affect Daedelic’s planned business change.
Daedalic Entertainment has been developing games since 2008 when it came out with Edna & Harvey: The Breakout and 1.5 Knights: In Search of the Ravishing Princess Herzelinde. Since then, it has been consistently producing new titles like further Edna & Harvey titles and the Deponia series. Daedalic hasn’t seen major success from any of these titles in years, with The Lord of the Rings: Gollum reviews damaging the company’s reputation.
The company began publishing games six years before it started developing in 2002, helping to fund and publicize titles like Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun and Barotrauma. The original article mentions that Daedalic currently has eight new titles scheduled for the next financial year but doesn’t mention which games these will be.
