The fifth playtest for the highly anticipated game Dark and Darker, a unique fusion of dungeon crawler and battle royale genres, has come to an end on April 19, 2023, at 8:00 PM PT. The developers have expressed their apologies for the various technical issues players experienced throughout the playtest, including bugs, instability, and other hurdles that fell short of the company’s quality standards. As a result, there will be no extension for this playtest.
Dark and Darker features a dark medieval fantasy setting and combines elements from various gaming genres, including RPGs, roguelikes, and multiplayer video games. The game has been described as belonging to the “extraction” subgenre of battle royales. Players can choose from seven character classes (fighter, barbarian, rogue, ranger, wizard, cleric, and bard) and engage in PvPvE (player versus player versus environment) gameplay. As the match progresses, the playable area shrinks, forcing players to confront one another while simultaneously battling monsters for valuable items.
Throughout the playtest, players encountered numerous issues, such as DDoS attacks, publishing through torrents due to an ongoing legal dispute, and a variety of bugs that necessitated multiple patches. Despite these setbacks, the developers are committed to enhancing the game’s quality and delivering it to fans as soon as possible. They plan to keep the community informed with regular updates and express gratitude for the unwavering support.
The official statement was made via the game’s Discord server:
Hi @everyone, We want to apologize for all the bugs, instability, and hurdles that you had to endure during this playtest. The quality did not meet our standards and we will focus on improving the game for our fans in the future. Unfortunately, there won’t be an extension of this playtest and it will end at April 19, 2023 8:00 PM. As always, we will share the data from this playtest shortly.
As for the company, we will do everything possible to get the game to our fans as soon as possible and update you as much as we can. Thank you once again for your tremendous support and we’ll see you in the dungeons!
The data collected from this playtest will be shared shortly to provide insight into the game’s current state and areas requiring improvement. Players who successfully navigated the treacherous dungeons and survived the matches were able to store their loot for future use or potential sales. The game also allows for item exchanges among players using in-game currency or other valuable items.
As the developers of Dark and Darker work tirelessly to address the issues faced during the fifth playtest, fans eagerly await further updates and improvements.
