Red Hook Studios, creators of the popular roguelike RPG Darkest Dungeon 2, recently revealed their plans to add mod support for the PC edition of the game. This is always well-liked, but it’s not something you’d expect from this game right now. It’s been available in Early Access since October 2021, and modding support normally comes after a full release.
Modding was a key factor in the lasting appeal of the first Darkest Dungeon game, so modding support makes sense. The sequel has taken a while to come to fruition, and the studio likely wants to hold onto fans. Adding modding support is a great way to keep the fan appeal they need.
Due to the game’s new engine, Red Hook is taking a step-by-step approach to adding mod support to Darkest Dungeon 2. Instead of waiting for a complete modding suite, they will release updates gradually. This way, they can get feedback from the community and shape future updates while also focusing on other big releases like console ports and the “Kingdoms” DLC. So you’re not getting the full package all at once.
The initial modding update, set to be released before the end of June 2024, will mainly focus on enhancing the core functions of loading and overwriting existing data. Modders will gain the ability to modify exposed .csv files, which manage much of the game’s numerical data, such as character stats, item values, and encounter probabilities.
Moreover, the first update will feature integration with the Steam Workshop, enabling the creation of custom items such as trinkets and combat items and the option to craft new hero palettes, introducing visual variations to existing characters.
Red Hook Studios plans to work with the modding community to eventually allow players to create custom heroes in Darkest Dungeon 2. This is likely what most people want, but it’s good to know it’s on the horizon.
