Darkest Dungeon II, an apocalyptic roguelike indie from developer and publisher Red Hook Studios, has just revealed that it will release a full 1.0 launch on May 8th, 2023. It will only be available on PC, via Steam and the Epic Games Store. It’s available to wishlist on Steam now.

During Steam Next Fest, which began today and runs through February 13th, interested players can also try a free demo on Epic and Steam. Here’s the full announcement from the official Darkest Dungeon Twitter feed:

Darkest Dungeon II has received an equal share of praise and criticism since launching in Early Access in late 2021. It’s a bit of a departure from the preceding game, which was an instant classic for the turn-based RPG genre, so expectations were unusually high. Despite many efforts to improve quality of life and mechanics, broader changes have largely been the issue for longtime fans.

However, Darkest Dungeon II’s points for style remain undeniable. It maintains a gorgeous art design, an interesting world, and some memorable characters. Essentials like the combat system are consistent.

The adventurous pacing is a neat elaboration for the series. It should feel more accessible for newcomers to the genre, or those who missed the 2016 original. Either way, exploring 3D versions of the series’ gritty universe is very satisfying, and the animations look terrific.

The demo should help players make up their minds. Although it won’t save your progress between expeditions, according to an official blog post, the demo will let fans try out one full region.

ICO Partners, known for communications and marketing, has also announced that they’ve partnered with the developers to coordinate the full launch of Darkest Dungeon II:
