Dead Island 2, an upcoming sequel to the zombie classic, has just released nearly fifteen new minutes of gameplay. The extended look showcases various environments and mechanics, including skills, Fury mode, and gunplay. Dead Island 2 launches on April 21st, 2023. It’ll be available on PC, as well as current and last gen consoles for PlayStation and Xbox.

Keep in mind that today’s full gameplay video is age-restricted, but here’s the announcement tweet from Dead Island’s official Twitter feed:

Naturally, fans have quickly drawn comparisons to Dying Light 2, another first-person zombie game. But Dead Island 2 distinguishes itself in a variety of ways, most of all by indulging pulpy and bombastic melee action over any kind of realism.

The gameplay feels just a little more flexible compared to the original. Players will have the freedom to build their character’s skills as they see fit, and the environments look more interactive.

Also, the weapons on display each have more personality than before. Aside from the bizarre original designs, basic weapons and guns appear to have their own weight and effects. These features should help shake up the gameplay loop, which many are concerned will become too redundant.

Although Dead Island 2 is set in Los Angeles, California, it explores different areas. Ideally, these environments will result in equally unique map traversal and interaction.

Today’s gameplay reveal made a big deal out of the brutal slaying visuals, which create a variety of slow-motion damage. But it’s important for players to have more freedom in the way they defeat zombies. Fury mode is a nice touch, giving players the abilities of the undead.

There will also be different types of zombies to contend with, each with their own weaknesses. But their abilities all look very familiar for the genre. The dialogue was also pretty stiff in today’s footage. Still, Dead Island 2 has the potential to be plenty of fun, as long as its mechanics are smooth, and it elaborates more on the wacky side of things like those electrified Wolverine claws.
