Destiny 2, Bungie’s free to play MMO shooter, has just revealed that a new showcase will premiere on August 22nd, 2023, beginning at 9 AM pacific time.

Further details about the showcase have not been confirmed, aside from the promo tagline “Discover what lies beyond”, as seen in today’s announcement tweet. The tweet also included an image that has left fans to speculate:

Destiny 2 has been a little divisive lately, despite some consistent updates with a lot of new content. Fortunately, today’s announcement continues Bungie’s determination to look towards the future.

The lore has expanded for years, so it’ll be interesting to see if Bungie can successfully shake up their routine and win over skeptical fans. There still seems to be a solid playerbase, and The Final Shape continues to build legitimate hype.

Assuming that Bungie can stick the landing, and leave fans with a positive conclusion, players may continue to invest. However, the beginning of a new saga will also be a great time for newcomers to jump in, who may have felt intimidated by the extensive history of Destiny 2. Especially since it happens to be a free to play game, which involves less risk.

It’s also unclear how much The Final Shape will influence the next saga, though it would be a shame for Bungie to ignore such a fine opportunity to refresh both the lore and gameplay. Sometimes it can be enough for MMOs to skate by on new areas or enemies, but truly evolving the mechanics goes a long way.

Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. Most recently, the game has focused on the S21 update, which adds a lot of weapon balancing.
