In an effort to address player feedback about the game’s reticle functionality, Bungie has announced in Destiny 2 Season 21 there will be some big changes to reticles. The alterations target specific issues raised by players, such as the less apparent information displayed during high field-of-view (FOV) settings, the difficulty of tracking perk states on Exotic weapons, and the challenges faced during combat due to elusive information.
A central concern for many players has been the dynamic between hip-fire reticles and FOV. The two reticle elements on the majority of weapons—autoaim and accuracy—are shown as moving circles and crosshairs. To maintain visibility and avoid obscuring the action, these elements are restricted in size. However, this clamping effect can lead to issues at high FOV settings, with elements remaining static, despite fluctuations in autoaim and accuracy.
To resolve this, Destiny 2 has reconstructed the reticles for Fusion Rifles, Hand Cannons, Sidearms, and Trace Rifles. These improvements will ensure the reticles remain dynamic and accurate, even at high FOV. Shotgun reticles have also been adjusted to scale with FOV, providing a more precise match to the pellet spread. Other weapon reticles are expected to receive similar updates in future releases.
In addition to FOV-related changes, critical aspects of Fusion Rifles and Swords, such as charge and guard energy, have been incorporated into the hip-fire reticles. This implementation enhances accessibility, reducing players’ reliance on audio and visual cues.
Moreover, Destiny 2 has been experimenting with aim-down-sights (ADS) reticles. Unlike the hip-fire variants, ADS reticles are custom-built for each weapon, often neglecting to display autoaim and accuracy information. As part of this experimental approach, Shayura’s Wrath will now feature an ADS reticle that adjusts to the weapon’s state and also changes color when an enemy within the weapon’s engagement range is targeted.
The new season will also usher in custom reticle elements for several Exotic weapons, which will display valuable information about their perks and states. Weapons to receive these additions include Ace of Spades, Lumina, and Traveler’s Chosen, among others. Moreover, Exotic weapons such as Devil’s Ruin and Salvation’s Grip, which don’t typically have a charge meter, will now feature this element in their reticles.
