Devolver Digital, the publisher best known for hits like Cult of the Lamb, has just revealed that a new direct is scheduled for June 8th, 2023, at 3 PM pacific time.
The announcement was accompanied by a new trailer, which adds that the direct will feature “new game reveals, announcements, and surprises”. It will also include the oddball mascot Volvy again. You’ll be able to catch the upcoming Devolver Direct on the official Summer Game Fest website. Here’s the full “Return of Volvy” direct trailer from the Devolver Digital YouTube channel:
Devolver Digital continues to amuse with their signature humor by subverting all expectations, and focusing entirely on their mascot instead of any real content. It seems like a clever prod about most direct trailers, regarding both their vagueness and the nature of marketing. There might even be a subtle jab at some AAA arrogance.
But it’s also a slick way to get away with avoiding any actual reveals, themselves. There is, in fact, nothing to break down, leaving fans with pure speculation. Still, the notion of all-new game reveals is certainly a major hook, as Devolver Digital has championed some very extraordinary indies.
For example, Devolver Digital has recently been pushing their upcoming Tarot-driven narrative game The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood, which showed off a card overview trailer just last week. It’s absolutely unlike any of Devolver’s previously published titles, with an equal share of subtle drama and the profound, at times coming off downright esoteric. It’s a sorely needed spin on an exhausted genre.
General announcements may also include release dates and other information about such existing titles, like puzzle adventure The Plucky Squire from All Possible Futures, or Nomada Studio’s emotional action-adventure Neva.
