In a recent interview with MinnMax, Media Molecule co-founder Mark Healey discussed his experience working on the PlayStation game Dreams. He mentioned feeling sorry about one feature that was never fully added: online multiplayer. Interestingly, they almost had it ready, but it just wasn’t added in.
The team at Media Molecule was working on adding online multiplayer to Dreams and had a basic version up and running. However, due to the complexities of the development process, they couldn’t release a final polished version to the public. Healey explained that while they made quick progress initially, the final touches required a surprising amount of time.
Sony didn’t even let the Dreams team port to PS5 or PC, so it clearly won’t allow for something like this to take time. We’ve recently seen the game lose staff, so it seems it won’t ever come.
Healey thinks that Dreams, a creative suite for building games and experiences, would have been a better fit for release on PC. He says that the toolset would work better with the usual keyboard and mouse controls found in PC gaming.
Media Molecule’s team has been praised, but Mark Healey has expressed regret for not including online multiplayer in Dreams initially. He mentioned the success of games like Roblox and Fortnite, emphasizing the importance of online interactions. He believes that Dreams was lacking this essential feature.
Healey admits that his point of view might be different from other people involved in the project. He stresses that the main reason the feature never became reality was the lack of enough time. Even though he has left Media Molecule, Healey still likes both the studio and the Dreams project.
