Dredge, an upcoming fishing adventure RPG from developer Black Salt Games and publisher Team17, has just sneaked in one more trailer ahead of launch. It is a completely animated cinematic, giving more backstory and atmosphere.
Dredge launches tomorrow on March 30th, 2023. It will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, and current or last-gen consoles for PlayStation and Xbox users. You can watch today’s new animated trailer on the Team17 YouTube channel here:
By this point, Dredge has released more than enough gameplay trailers to convince any curious fans of the genre to try it out. But even though today’s “feature length” trailer is actually quite short, it also creates a true sense of dread and mystery.
Animation can represent the game just as effectively as gameplay, as long as the two are consistent in quality. Fortunately, that certainly appears to be the case.
The pure, visceral storytelling in today’s new trailer is impressive, with deep red and blue scenes that capture a shadowy and aquatic world. The music is equally patient and bombastic as needed, so that nuanced moments get to breathe.
Although you’ve likely seen today’s animated footage before, this trailer changes the context of the game, and puts even more of an emphasis on the worldbuilding and pacing that fans should expect.
It does have a kind of profound attitude, which is probably overreaching a bit. But it does hint at the full Dredge experience better than some gameplay trailers for similar titles have mustered.
Besides, any excuse to show off another perspective of the gorgeous art design is worth taking advantage of. There is definitely a handcrafted texture to every scene in Dredge that’s going to make it worth exploring.
