Starbreeze Entertainment has announced that it will develop and publish a new Dungeons & Dragons game called Project Baxter. Starbreeze is best known for the Payday franchise and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. The Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) game is set to be released in 2026 and will be available on all major platforms.
According to the website post, Project Baxter will be a cooperative multiplayer game focusing on community engagement and a larger-than-life experience. The game will be set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons and will feature all of the iconic characters and creatures that fans of the game can expect. The story is what you’d expect: players can create their own characters and try to save the world from evil.
When looking at prospective IPs for our future projects, Dungeons & Dragons was always at the top of our list and I’m incredibly happy to announce this license. I want to thank Wizards of the Coast for being such a great partner.
Tobias Sjögren, CEO of Starbreeze
Project Baxter will be a Games as a Service title, meaning it will receive regular updates and new content after its release. This is generally not a popular decision in the video game industry, and we’ve seen this done incredibly poorly in the past. The poster child for how not to do a live service game is Avengers, but it’s hard to find a non-multiplayer game that does live service well.
Starbreeze is confident that Project Baxter will be a hit with fans of the franchise and will attract new players to the world of Dungeons & Dragons. After the runaway success of Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s clear that players like the style of the D&D universe.
