Electronic Arts has officially introduced their new AAA studio Cliffhanger Games in a new tweet today. Based in Seattle, their debut title will feature Black Panther and Wakanda.
An official blog reveals that the untitled Black Panther game will be a single player action-adventure, with story-driven and third person gameplay. Players will also have control over the narrative, set in an “expansive and reactive world”.
Led by Kevin Stephens, the game will be made in collaboration with Marvel Games, ensuring an ideal level of authenticity. The creatives involved have worked on hit titles like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, as well as “Halo Infinite, God of War, Call of Duty and others”.
Here’s an announcement tweet from Cliffhanger Games’ feed, which includes an exclusive promo for their Black Panther game:
EA has built a rather sour relationship with fans, but all of the details about this Black Panther game sound terrific. The devs seem committed to an immersive, authentic, and single-player experience, which feel like they’re in shorter supply these days.
Black Panther is also a beloved character, and the MCU adaptation was an absolute phenomenon. The closest fans have gotten to something like Cliffhanger Games’ upcoming adventure is the Marvel’s Avengers version. It also explored Wakanda to an extent, and ultimately gave the struggling title a massive breath of fresh air.
Wakanda is just naturally boundless, so it’ll be fascinating to see what kind of themes and characters will appear in an original story. There’s an enormous amount of pressure to meet the quality of previous storytelling, tackling a complex world.
Fortunately, it’s clear that Cliffhanger Games is handing a AAA budget to reliable industry veterans, so hopefully the results will transcend some of EA’s more troublesome habits.
