In a recent translated interview, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Elden Ring, provided more details about the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The DLC aims to address unresolved questions from the main game, delve deeper into the game world’s lore, and introduce fresh challenges for players. We were able to get a lot of details from a Twitter user who translated it.

In a new interview with Gouhuo yingdi – translated by @swordandflower on X (Formerly Twitter) – Miyazaki has announced that only one DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, will be released for Elden Ring. This decision may mean no more DLC expansions in the future, but he hinted that the Elden Ring universe could be explored in future titles. This makes sense, considering FromSoftware’s history of revisiting popular IPs.

The DLC explores more lore and story elements that couldn’t fit in the main game. It aims to provide one big expansion instead of several smaller ones. Players will learn more about the world of Elden Ring and its mysterious characters.

Miyazaki says that the DLC adjusts to a player’s progress, which is meant for those who have advanced through the later part of the main game. A new leveling system aims to make the experience suitable for different skill levels by letting players customize their challenge level.

The latest expansion introduces eight completely new types of weapons, as well as new Ashes of War and spells. This gives players many new options to try out different fighting styles and character builds. These new fighting elements can also be used in the main game, adding more options for players and making the game more interesting to explore.

“The difficulty level of the DLC should be around the later half of the game, since the player needs to defeat Radahn and Mohg, and by that point the player should have developed a certain understanding for the game. Overall, since it’s the later half, the difficulty level should be relatively high. Also, we have implemented a new leveling/progression element in the DLC that allows players to choose their own challenge. For instance, if the player is quite leveled in the main game, then they could opt out of this leveling system in the DLC, and not increase this new stat to challenge themselves. But if you feel like it’s a bit difficult, then you could level up this new stat to make your character stronger.”

The upcoming DLC will include a New Game+ feature, which adjusts the difficulty as players progress. Miyazaki has suggested that the DLC will contain hidden elements and secrets to encourage players to explore further. While the main game’s ending will remain unchanged, the DLC will answer some unresolved mysteries. This was a pretty informative interview, which is always cool to see.
