In a recent interview with IGN, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Elden Ring and other popular Souls-like games, shared insights into the past two years since Elden Ring’s release. He went over his approach to game development and the future of FromSoftware. One interesting piece of the interview was that players still hadn’t found something in Elden Ring.

Regarding the upcoming Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, Miyazaki hinted at a “small element” in the base game that has yet to be discovered, encouraging players to keep exploring and interpreting the expansive world. This makes us wonder what exactly has been missed that would be worth everyone searching for.

“For me personally, there is a small element that I feel has not yet been discovered. So, whether that’s up to user interpretation or up to just further investigation and playing, that’s something I’m looking forward to. I think it’s a question of when and not if, but there may be something small still missing.”

Hidetaka Miyazaki

Other than that, Miyazaki recognized the significant excitement surrounding Elden Ring. He clearly has confidence in players’ capacity to tackle open-world obstacles without the usual quest markers. He stressed the value of exploration and finding things, viewing it as a fundamental guiding principle in the game’s design.

Interestingly, Miyazaki also talked about Dark Souls 2, which he supervised but didn’t directly direct. He praised the game, calling it a “great project” that contributed valuable ideas to the series’ evolution. He highlighted the importance of diverse perspectives and believes different directors bring fresh approaches, which are crucial for the series’ growth.

Looking forward, Miyazaki suggested that he may assign directorial responsibilities for upcoming “Souls-like” games to others. He is confident in the team and thinks that giving opportunities to new voices will bring new ideas and viewpoints to the studio. While not giving away details about a potential Bloodborne sequel because of intellectual property rights, Miyazaki expressed contentment with the recent release of Armored Core 6. He hinted that this achievement might lead to more additions to the series in the future.
