Elden Ring players can look forward to delving further into the Lands Between with the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. However, that will probably be the only time they will return to the world in this game. FromSoftware has announced this will be the final additional content for the highly praised RPG.

Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Elden Ring and the head of FromSoftware, recently updated the company’s plans in a new interview with Chinese outlet Campfire Camp (thanks, GR). Unlike previous releases, such as Dark Souls 3, which received multiple DLCs, Elden Ring will have a single expansion titled Shadow of the Erdtree. This announcement may surprise some, considering the widespread success and continued popularity of Elden Ring since its launch in 2022.

Despite confirming Shadow of the Erdtree as the final DLC, Miyazaki didn’t completely rule out revisiting the world of Elden Ring. He mentioned that FromSoftware’s development style naturally allows for potential future projects set within the Lands Between. This leaves the door open for a full sequel, although nothing has been officially announced.

“It is the first and last DLC. We have no plans to add more content to Elden Ring. But it has not yet been decided whether the entire story of Elden’s Ring will be the focus. Fromsoftware’s style of doing things is that it generally does not allow the future of an IP to be easily locked, but it is better to leave some possibilities. But as far as Shadow of the Erdtree is concerned, it is the only DLC.”

Publisher Bandai Namco has suggested that Elden Ring could be the beginning of a franchise that goes beyond the game itself. This might include expansions into other forms of media, like an anime adaptation or sequels. However, there have been no new updates or developments on this. We’ll have to wait and see where the series goes, but it won’t be sticking with the first game.

In the end, this is a good thing. While DLC is fun, a new game often provides bigger and better things for players, including fixes and improvements in gameplay. So we won’t think this is a bad thing, but instead, it’s just news that adds to the possibility of a sequel.
