Epic Games has announced its official return to the iOS platform in Europe following a years-long legal battle with Apple. The company secured its Apple Developer Account and plans to launch the Epic Games Store for iOS in Europe later this year. It looks like Fortnite will be back soon.

This development comes from the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), enacted in March 2024. The DMA requires major tech companies like Apple to allow third-party app stores on their platforms, paving the way for Epic’s return. Epic Games Sweden AB, with its three studios and 60+ employees, will operate the mobile Epic Games Store and Fortnite in Europe. The company hasn’t provided a specific launch date but confirmed development will begin soon.

“We’ve received our Apple Developer Account and will start developing the Epic Games Store on iOS soon thanks to the new Digital Markets Act. We plan to launch in 2024. Epic Games Sweden AB will operate the mobile Epic Games Store and Fortnite in Europe, with the Store team leading development.”

This move will allow European users to download and play Fortnite, as well as potentially access other games offered through the Epic Games Store. Epic Games also announced plans for various other improvements and features for its PC store in 2024. These include a new Download Manager with queue management and scheduling, enhanced Offline Mode functionality, improved social features for friends, pre-loading for pre-purchases, and subscription support for developers.

The company plans to introduce dynamic bundles that allow users to buy discounted bundles even if they already own some of the included content. The return of the Epic Games Store to iOS in Europe will likely shake up the app distribution landscape in the region. Whether Epic can attract developers and users to its platform remains to be seen, but this move undoubtedly challenges Apple’s dominance.
