Bethesda has explained the availability of the free next-gen update for Fallout 4, leading to confusion and disappointment among PlayStation owners. The update, which was first announced as free for all game owners, is now confirmed exclusive to those who have the game through the PlayStation Plus Extra catalog. This means that players who obtained Fallout 4 via the now-discontinued PS Plus Collection cannot get the free next-gen upgrade.
The PS Plus Collection was a special deal for PS5 owners who had a PS Plus subscription. It offered a bunch of popular PS4 games, including Fallout 4. This offer ended in May 2022. According to Bethesda, the next-gen update for Fallout 4 will be accessible to PlayStation Plus Extra members via the PlayStation Game Catalog. They also asked for patience as the teams worked on it.
Understandably, owners of the PS Plus Collection expected to get the update for free and have shared their frustrations. Bethesda’s initial message suggested that the next-gen update was a free upgrade for all Fallout 4 owners. It’s easy to assume that would be the case, but it makes sense that it isn’t. Microsoft owns Bethesda, so an update of this magnitude that is completely free on PlayStation seems like a mistake.
To clarify, it is accessible for PlayStation Plus Extra, not for regular purchases. Until we receive word on any refunds, it looks like you’re out of luck if you bought the game on PlayStation expecting a free update. The refund policy is clear: two weeks or two hours of playtime is all you get before you can get a refund. The game is also a good game, so it’d be hard to claim that you have played or owned it longer and are not satisfied.
