Atlas Fallen, an upcoming monster hunting RPG from developer Deck13 and publisher Focus Entertainment, will officially launch on May 16th, 2023. It will be available on PC, as well as next-gen consoles for PlayStation and Xbox. Here’s the big announcement from Focus Entertainment’s Twitter feed, which adds that a gameplay reveal trailer is “coming soon”:
It seems that EA and Koei Tecmo’s Wild Hearts, which just launched last month, won’t be the only serious competition for the beloved Monster Hunter franchise. While Wild Hearts distinguishes itself with technological equipment and cultural influences from Feudal Japan, Atlas Fallen takes a dusty note from Dune and blends it with mythological gods.
Atlas Fallen’s combination of fantasy and apocalypse is very compelling, and its monsters certainly have their own flavor. They’re more like classic Ray Harryhausen creatures, harkening back to the likes of Clash of the Titans.
The only footage released thus far has been cinematic, but it sets up a ripe premise and sprawling environments. The protagonists have some traditional fantasy clothing, but it’s detailed and gorgeous, nonetheless. There’s also an element of survival which is more akin to Wild Hearts than Monster Hunter. Oddly, the oversized weapons from the latter are featured in Atlas Fallen.
It’s unclear just how much Atlas Fallen will lean into the traditional monster hunting gameplay loop. If it does, Atlas Fallen may need more than some neat lore to justify its existence and win over fans of the competition.
The game’s official Steam page reveals that players will have a fully cooperative or single-player campaign experience. That could certainly help Atlas Fallen stand apart and add meaning to the action sequences. The upcoming gameplay reveal trailer will clear up the devs’ approach, but the world does look promising.
