Fortnite has introduced a new feature to tackle toxic behavior in the game. The latest update includes a setting called “See Confrontational Emotes” to address the misuse of certain in-game emotes, often used for taunting or harassing other players. We all know that this is an issue, so it’s good to see that there will be an option not to see it.
You can now find the “See Confrontational Emotes” toggle within the game’s settings in the Account and Privacy menu. When turned on, it filters out four specific emotes that Epic Games has linked to negative behavior:
- Laugh It Up: This emote features obnoxious donkey-like laughter.
- Take the L: A dance move where the player forms an “L” shape on their forehead, mockingly labeling the opponent a “loser.”
- Whipcrack: A simple whip-cracking emote that has taken on racist connotations within some segments of the Fortnite community.
- Make It Plantain: With this emote, players fire banana-like projectiles—another item that has been used in racially charged taunts.
The last two are especially terrible, and if you’ve watched a colored streamer, you know how awful stream snipers have been. I’m honestly glad this is a thing to remove because some people really go overboard with this.
Enabling the filter does not stop others from using these emotes. Instead, players who have it turned on won’t see an emote or any sound associated with the emote. Basically, you won’t know they are emoting at you at all. By default, the setting still lets you see these emotes when used by friends in your party, but that’s also changeable. Players can change the setting to see the emotes from everyone or block them completely.
Epic Games stated that the company recognized the problem of toxic player behavior, a common issue in online games. While some teasing is normally playful, some people go way too far. They have introduced a new feature to find a middle ground between addressing player concerns about abuse and allowing players to express themselves through emotes. This change is intended to give players more control over their in-game experience without removing the emotes some players have purchased.
We doubt that this will affect the item shop. Someone else blocking the emote doesn’t mean you won’t see it, so it just makes the game more fun for everyone involved.
