Sega and the Lego Group have announced a collaboration that brings fan-favorite Sonic characters and environments to life in the form of Lego sets. This new product range, named Lego Sonic the Hedgehog, allows Sonic enthusiasts to build and play with Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Dr. Eggman across levels such as Sonic’s Speed Sphere, Tails’s Workshop and Tornado Plane, Amy’s Animal Rescue Island, and the iconic Green Hill Zone. These new sets will be available for purchase at authorized retailers starting August 2023.

While a release date wasn’t revealed in the trailer, the new sets are expected to launch this year. You can watch the full Sonic the Hedgehog set trailer on the official LEGO YouTube channel:

Although the current box office is dominated by the immensely satisfying The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the live-action Sonic universe recently broke news about the Knuckles spin-off series. And it seems that was only the beginning of Sonic’s answer.

Super Mario has had a long history of level-building sets, with a variety of digital interactions. But the expansions can sometimes feel a little more decorative than anything else, and there aren’t many pieces for actual construction.

This partnership builds on the global companies’ previous collaboration, which saw the release of the successful Lego Ideas Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone set in 2021. The new collection includes four unique sets that cater to Sonic fans’ diverse interests.

Amy’s Animal Rescue Island, comprising 388 pieces, offers players the chance to join Amy and Tails on a beach-themed adventure, complete with hidden areas that are revealed when Amy strikes a button with her hammer. The set also includes a brick-built Crabmeat and three tiny animal figures: Picky, Pocky, and Flicky.

The Green Hill Zone Loop Challenge set, featuring 802 pieces, closely resembles a game level and includes a large loop assembly and a Dr. Eggman end-of-level battle. In addition to minifig versions of Sonic, Amy, and Dr. Eggman, the set contains brick-built Badniks Chopper and Newtron, as well as four small animals: Flicky, Becky, Pocky, and Pecky.

The 376-piece Tails’s Workshop and Tornado Plane set focuses on Tails’s swoopy plane and a basic workshop façade for the characters to tinker in. It comes with Sonic, Tails, a Buzz Bomber build, and a tiny Clucky.

Lastly, Sonic’s Speed Sphere Challenge, a 292-piece set, features Sonic, a brick-built Moto Bug, and Sonic’s Flicky friend. The set includes a launcher, an arch, gold rings, a ramp, and a beach chair and DJ mini-builds for Sonic to relax in after a day of heroics.

The pricing for these new sets is as follows:

  • Sonic’s Speed Sphere Challenge: US$34.99 / £24.99
  • Tails’s Workshop and Tornado Plane: US$39.99 / £37.99
  • Amy’s Animal Rescue Island: US$49.99 / £46.99
  • Sonic’s Green Hill Zone Loop Challenge: US$99.99 / £94.99

Between the LEGO Technic speed sphere launcher, loop, and traditional bricks, the variety in these sets feel very novel. The different textures really help capture the visual cues of the source material, where the environment always contrasted with the mechanical devices.

LEGO wisely made all of the new sets feel like they’re part of a single scene, so that fans would be very likely purchase the lot of them. But you’ll get hundreds of pieces in each set, where the smaller details will surely win you over. These sets don’t just offer the likeness of Sonic’s world, but also the playfulness and energy.
