Cliff Bleszinski, the creator of the Gears of War franchise, has expressed interest in making a God of War style reboot of the series. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Bleszinski said that he believes Gears of War is “due for a reboot in the vein of God of War.” This is huge news on its own and is probably the perfect time for something like this.
During his interview, Bleszinski said that Xbox only needs to give him a call if they’re interested. “I’ve always said, Phil Spencer (CEO of Microsoft Gaming) has my number, I’d be happy to consult,” Bleszinski said. “I think Gears of War is a great franchise, and I think it has a lot of potential for a reboot. I’d love to see it done right.”
Bleszinski hasn’t worked on the Gears of War series since Gears of War 3, but he’s still a passionate fan of the franchise. He said that he’s been impressed with the work that The Coalition has done on the recent Gears of War games. However, he’s got a vision for where the series needs to go next. “I think The Coalition has done a great job with the recent Gears of War games,” Bleszinski said. “But I think the series is due for a reboot. I’d love to see a Gears of War game that’s more cinematic and more focused on story.”
It would be interesting to see Gears of War focus more on a story instead of a horde-like third-person shooter. Character development could be enhanced by referencing dead characters and focusing on the fog of war that has been in the heads of survivors.
Since leaving Epic Games in 2012, Bleszinski has been involved in a number of different projects. He founded his own studio, Boss Key Productions, in 2014. However, the studio closed its doors in 2018 after its only game, LawBreakers, failed to meet sales expectations.
Xbox just needs to call Bleszinski, and we hope they do. If Gears of War can get a more mature reboot – mature in the sense of narrative and story – we may see that happen to other games as well.
