News updates from Gotham Knights are few and far between, but as promised, there has been a fresh mission update with some very exciting announcements. It’s one of the biggest updates yet, with several reveals about the character and gameplay mechanics.
Here’s the official gameplay video, featuring a brief demo narrated by the game director Geoff Ellenor:
The gameplay walkthrough in the promotional video explains a lot, mainly revealing how Nightwing and Red Hood function in-game.
To begin with, it’s revealed that Nightwing has a glider called the “flying trapeze”, a fun little nod to his days as Robin. Fans get a display of Nightwing’s combat style, which is naturally acrobatic. But it also reveals that Nightwing has his own grapple hook, too.
Ellenor also briefly explains Red Hood’s origin, so players will understand why the character can leap through the sky on “soul energy”.
Red Hood fires non-lethal rounds, and helps defend against armored attacks. It’s clear that each character has an established role to play, which is crucial in RPGs.
Gameplay Mechanics and Features
The gameplay mechanics themselves are also a high point, as the gameplay demo reveals that every crime functions like a unique minigame. This offers players a variety of ways to explore and defend Gotham. For example, the scene in the demo involves a hacking crime.
Combat can accelerate by building up a momentum bar, using good timing during battle, until a kind of ultimate ability is unlocked.
Teammates can even combine their attacks on a single enemy, which is pretty glorious. However, the narration of the demo carefully suggests that you can play co-op with “a friend”. This singular phrasing may suggest that an option with four players wasn’t quite true.
Finally, the brief promo revealed that the game UI is customizable, which will be a relief for any RPG fan. But in the demo, it’s unclear just how much can be adjusted.
Full Gameplay Demo reveals
The complete demo runs thirteen minutes on YouTube, and it revealed several more features. For example, a bat computer allows players to access missions and progress the story from a central headquarters. Fortunately, there will be fast travel.
A workbench area in the game allows you to upgrade the suit, melee, and ranged stats for a given character. This is done by spending the blueprints and crafting materials that are found and earned. Some gear can be further upgraded using “mod chips”.
In battle, the full demo also shows that players can choose between a stealthy approach or bringing the noise. There will also be mysteries to solve through investigation, which should be very satisfying for fans of the detective angle used in The Batman.
Lastly, the demo unveils players’ first interaction with the Court of Owls, including their varied enemies. This includes a “Talon Gladiator”, who is larger and stronger. Having a variety of enemies to fight should help prevent some of the redundancy found in the game’s peers.
