Obsidian Entertainment’s survival game Grounded is getting a new update that will give players the tools to create their own games. The Make It and Break It Update includes a new Playgrounds mode that allows players to build their own levels and game experiences.
According to the blog post from Xbox, players will have access to a suite of design tools that will allow them to craft buildings, place obstacles, furniture, and even creature spawners. They can also use the new Gadgets and Gizmos suite of tools to build out mechanics for their custom spaces.
To quote Obsidian game director Adam Brennecke, “This feature has been on the backlog for a very long time. Giving people the opportunity to extend the lifetime of the games they enjoy is always really cool, which was very important to us. We’ve always wanted to see what the community can make with these tools.”
The Make It and Break It Update is a significant addition to Grounded that gives players a lot of new tools and creative freedom. It allows players to create their own custom levels, mini-games, battle arenas, role-playing games, and adventure games.
The Grounded QA team has already created some amazing examples of what players can create with the playmaking tools, including a custom level based on the popular TV show Squid Game and a mini-game where players race each other through a series of obstacle courses.
I would love to see this and to see someone take the idea and make a much better version. Roblox already does a great job of squid game, so I’d like to see the Grounded community make something bug-related. Spider Game would be a good title.
The tweet above gives some cool bullet points on what’s been added. I would not be surprised if I saw a bunch of squid game copies in the Grounded game because of this update.
Brennecke says that the team has been honing in on making the core Grounded experience the best it can possibly be for the last year. They were inspired by the modding community and wanted to give players the tools to craft their own unique Grounded experience, and the ability to share and try out others’ creations as well.
