Half Life 1 has a new branch named “Test” and we’ve seen it get major updates for the past day or so. It seems like a hotfix or a major update to the game. Valve hasn’t done much to Half-Life 1 recently, and the series will likely not see a third game for another few decades. However, seeing work done on the game brings a bit of hope.

It’s not just the work on the new branch that has us excited. A Valve contractor also seems to be helping in the tease. Their tweet “Big day today, Freeman.” has us thinking that there definitely is something coming really soon.

I’ve been looking at this changelog for a while, and all I’m seeing is updates galore. Many things are getting changed and improved so I would believe that this is more than just a simple hotfix. This could be a graphical improvement, similar to what we saw with Counter-Strike 2 (CS2), or another type of improvement. I can see the company working on a better or bigger version of Half-Life 1 but with the option to play the original game.

This is why I think there is a new branch so that players can start the game and press the “Half-Life 1: Definitive Edition” option. That option and the whole idea is just an example, of course. It seems like a long shot until you think about how Bethesda only released Skyrim Legendary Edition because they tested the Fallout 4 engine by remaking Skyrim in it. Maybe the staff at Valve thought that CS2 was a big hit and it wouldn’t be too difficult to improve Half-Life 1.

We don’t have any more information on what this could be but we do know that something is coming so it’s a good idea to stay tuned to Valve’s Twitter to see what they’ll announce.
