For a while, many people thought that the Helldivers 2 studio Arrowhead was getting bought out. X (formerly Twitter) had a rumor spreading about Sony Interactive Entertainment’s possible acquisition of Arrowhead Game Studios. The rumors stemmed from a tweet by Hunter suggesting the acquisition was impending and that an official announcement would be made soon.
This started with Hunter getting the rumor from a post on a gaming forum site. I can see how some of it would be believed because the Ghost of Tsushima rumor was true. Still, it’s hard to imagine that so many would believe the rumor when the CEO of Arrowhead is pretty open. In fact, he commented on the situation to clarify things. Hunter said it was a rumor, but some people took off with it.
Johan Pilestedt, the CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios, debunked these claims by stating, “This is fake… Unless I’ve missed something. Also, a really old logo from 2008 or so when we just started the studio.” Pilestedt’s response confirmed that the rumors were false and highlighted an outdated logo used in the initial claim, further undermining its credibility.
This incident shows how important it is to double-check information shared online, especially regarding industry news and possible takeovers. I get how it’s interesting, but you have to be sure it is. While social media can give us updates in real-time, it’s really important to make sure the information is true before sharing it. Pilestedt’s direct response, in this case, gave a clear answer and stopped false information from spreading.
To be honest, I wish there were far more CEOs like him. It’s a breath of fresh air when the CEO is also a good spokesperson. As of March 6, 2024, Arrowhead Game Studios is still an independent developer, and there have been no official announcements about it being acquired.
