In a tweet on their official X (formerly Twitter) channel, Arrowhead Game Studios, the developers behind Helldivers 2, confirmed the addition of mechs to the game. The tweet shows an image of a mech that many players assumed was coming to the game soon. Now, it looks like they’re all right.

This news comes after weeks of speculation and leaks surrounding the inclusion of mechs in Helldivers 2. The tweet specifically mentions the “EXO-45 Patriot Exosuit,” hinting at the possibility of multiple mech variants being introduced in the future. I’m not as well versed in the game to know what mech that is exactly, but it looks like players are getting some heavy firepower.

While an exact release date for the mechs wasn’t provided, the use of the word “soon” suggests players won’t have to wait an extended period to pilot these mechanized suits. Adding mechs can significantly alter the gameplay experience in Helldivers 2, offering players a new and powerful tool for combat and potentially altering existing strategies. However, to me, it sounds like it will come with some bad news.

Helldivers 2 isn’t the kind of game that makes things easy for no reason. An enemy is likely coming that can only be destroyed using these mechs. Players will likely get maybe a week or two of enjoying the mech and the high firepower, clearing through planets quickly. Then, a big bad enemy will come and intensify the fighting.

The mech looks a lot like a Gekko from Metal Gear Solid 4 without the weird feet. We have heard some talk about how Metal Gear Solid V inspired the movement of this game, so it would make sense that another game in the series inspired a mech. I think it’s cool, and more games should borrow from others to continue improving systems that work.

We expect more details about the specific features and restrictions of the EXO-45 Patriot Exosuit and the possibility of additional mech variants much later.
