Arrowhead Game Studios has announced that the robotic Automaton enemies are back in Helldivers 2, despite previous reports of their eradication. This is obviously part of the game’s live-service model, where the story develops over time.
Players of Helldivers 2 were recently informed through in-game messages and social media posts about a significant triumph over the Automatons. This sparked speculation about potential upcoming threats. However, the narrative took an (un)expected turn when it was revealed that the previous Automaton forces were actually a precursor for a much larger invasion.
Arrowhead announced on the official Helldivers 2 Twitter account that the Automatons have returned. They’ve also come in an overwhelming force kind of way. The latest update has introduced a new Major Order in the game, asking players to slow down the Automaton advance and protect important locations. This invasion is expected to make the game more challenging for experienced Helldivers.
The return of the Automatons is just part of the larger lore of the game. The developers, led by someone known as the “Game Master” Joel, actively influence the game’s story and adjust gameplay elements to introduce unexpected developments. The recent inclusion of huge AT-AT-like walker enemies and environmental hazards like blizzards and sandstorms show how things can change on a dime.
Unfortunately, there’s still no mention of when Xbox can join in on the fun.
