Renowned game developer Hideo Kojima has once again piqued gamers’ interest with cryptic remarks about his upcoming game, OD. Kojim loves referencing his newest game and giving hints and details about it, but this one gives us a better idea of what he’s aiming for.
In a recent tweet, Kojima reflected on his history of creating unorthodox games that “go against the current of the times,” citing iconic franchises like Metal Gear and Death Stranding as examples. He then alluded to a more obscure experimental project: a “defeating vampires outside your house” game that utilized real sunlight. It sounds like he had thought of a competitor to Pokémon Go that could have done amazing.
Kojima’s tweet subtly connects this rejected concept and his two previous franchises to OD, stating, “In that sense, ‘OD’ is just as different.” So, it seems like OD will be something that isn’t following the current industry trend. Many know that Death Stranding, being a delivery game, is hard to pull off, but Kojima did great.
For those who don’t know, Kojima originally started his career by working on a war shooter, which was popular at the time. Games where players had to use stealth were not popular until Kojima made Metal Gear, which is what that shooter became. This means that OD could be the start of another new genre.
It’s important to note that at this stage, any interpretation of OD based on Kojima’s tweet remains purely speculative. Official details about the game’s mechanics, story, or release date are yet to be revealed and could change before confirmation is given. However, having played Kojima’s games for years, I’d bet that this one deviating from the norm is a great thing and that we may see another hit.
