Homicidal All-Stars, an upcoming tactical turn-based action game from developer Artificer and publisher Good Shepherd Entertainment, has officially been renamed Showgunners. Also, the game has a new release date set for May 2nd, 2023.
Showgunners will be available on PC via GOG and Steam, where fans can wishlist the game now. You can review the new release date trailer on Good Shepherd Entertainment’s official YouTube channel here:
Renaming the game to Showgunners is certainly an interesting and bold move, but it’s clearly a much friendlier name that basically retains the spirit of the premise. It’s possible that the word “homicidal” may have been steeped a little too much in real issues. But the devs officially state that it was rebranded to better suit the gameplay and aesthetic.
Showgunners is set in a familiar world with televised bloody tournaments, a theme that’s been popular in cult classics like The Running Man and Death Race 2000, or even something as recent as The Hunger Games. Fortunately, there seem to be more than enough surprises to help Showgunners distinguish itself.
The combination of mechanics is a little unexpected, and always for the better. There are deadly puzzles, fame and sponsorships, an unpredictable show director and even Twitch integration.
Streamers and their fans should really enjoy the opportunity to interact with that way, since it also sort of breaks the fourth wall. Through Twitch, viewers will basically get the chance to direct the levels the same way they’re manipulated in-game.
Strangely, players will also get the opportunity to explore, which offers more worldbuilding than the premise would traditionally allow. Today’s trailer was mostly cinematic, which is a shame, but there is a playable demo on Steam to get a clearer idea of the game.
