The Hydra is one of the toughest boss fights in Chrono Cross: Radical Dreamers. You’ll encounter this boss in the Hydra Marshes if you choose to save the poison-afflicted Kid. The Hydra has a unique Yellow Tech ability called Putrid Odor which decimates your entire party in two turns. It also can lower your party’s DEF stat, allowing the Hydra to deal massive damage. Once defeated, the Hydra will drop common and rare loot, namely Upheaval and Copper. Strategies in beating this boss involve prioritizing healing at every turn and making sure to equip Green Techs when you enter the battle. If you are still having trouble with this boss, we’ll teach you how to beat it with this guide!
Hydra Boss Fight Guide
The key to beating the Hydra boss in Chrono Cross: Radical Dreamers is strategizing when to heal and exploit its elemental weaknesses.

The Hydra boss has an innate Yellow Element, which means it is weak to Green Elements. However, adding a party member with an innate Green Element means that the party member is susceptible to huge damages and disadvantages based on the color elements. The best thing to do is deal damage using Green Techs from party members who don’t have an innate Green Element affinity.
The boss has four abilities that it can use, namely Putrid Odor, Spirits Up, Spirits Down, and Wave of Fear. Be wary of Wave of Fear, though, as it will lower everyone’s defenses in just one turn, making Hydra’s next attack to be devastating. Spirits Up will also increase Hydra’s defense, while Spirits Down will decrease your party member’s defense. These debuffs can heavily punish your party if they go unchecked. Putrid Odor damages everyone in your party, so it is best to heal at every opportunity. Once debuffed, your party members are prone to receiving huge amounts of damage, so it is best to always keep your HP above 70.

To do this, make sure that you bring enough Tablets before fighting the boss. It is OK to give up a single turn to make sure that your party members are healed up and ready to take on any damage the Hydra will dish out to you. Cure abilities also work but ensure that your party members have enough Green Tech abilities. Green Techs such as Aero Saucer and Bush Basher will deal massive damage to the Hydra, making this fight much faster. After whittling down its 700 HP to 0, the Hydra will faint, and you can now obtain the much-needed Hydra Humour for Kid’s quest.
