How to get a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone in Elden Ring

Find an easy Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone to reach full damage potential in Elden Ring!
Elden Ring Ancient Dragon Somber Stone

As you enter the end game of Elden Ring, you may need to find a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone to reach the full potential of a weapon. For most of the game, the same materials are used in the upgrade process. Either normal Smithing Stones or Somber Smithing Stones are spent. But to max out the damage, you’ll need to find a rare Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, and this guide will outline exactly how.

Where to find a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone in Elden Ring

There is a limited number of Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones in Elden Ring and they are all spread out through the late game locations. However, there are a couple of locations that allow for the easiest access to a stone and one of them even allows you to skip any confrontation. Even a relatively easy stone is still quite a process though, and you’ll need to make your way to some of the optional areas within the game.

Earning a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone through the Latenna quest:

  • Talk to the man behind the jar at the Village of the Albunaurics in Liurnia.
  • He will give one half of the Haligtree Medallion.
  • With the medallion, head to the Slumbering Wolf’s Shack found within the Lakeside Crystal Cave in Liurnia.
  • At the shack, speak to Latenna and agree to help her out on her quest.
  • Defeat Commander Niall in Castle Sol within the north and claim the other medallion half.
  • With access to the Haligree, head to the Grand Lift of Rold and use the secret key.
  • Once you are in the Consecrated Snowfields, head all the way to the Apostate Derelict at the northernmost point.
  • There will be a woman on the ground, stand before her and summon Latenna with the prompt.
  • Speak with her and claim the reward.

This is one of the easiest ways to earn a rare stone like this, especially because a medallion will be needed for most of them regardless. But with this method, there won’t be nearly as much danger or exploring.

Find another easy Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone near Mohg

Another method with a bit more danger is to head to Mohgwyn Palace. This is an underground area in Elden Ring, but it can be accessed through the Consecrated Snowfields. All you need to do is head south of the Apostate Derelict to a small forest where a Sanguine Noble will appear. In this area is a teleporter to the palace.

From here, you can sprint through the small area and up to the palace if you want to get the stone quickly. You will know when you found the right place because there will be a Sanguine Noble and a ton of grunts guarding a chest right before the Mohg fight. Opening the chest will give players their second stone used for special weapons.

There are more stones available in the game, but they are limited and hidden well. For more information on items and bosses alike, head to the Elden Ring section of our site!
