Minecraft is a game that makes your imagination the limit to what you can do. The freedom to do so much is great, but you’re going to find yourself wanting to illuminate your creations or having a hard time seeing at some point. This is when having a light source is going to be important in Minecraft, and making candles is a quick and easy way to get one that’s both decorative and effective! After making a candle, you can add even more of a twist by upgrading it to a dyed candle.
Creating Candles Guide
Time needed: 15 minutes.
To make candles in Minecraft, you’ll need to find a few items before you get started. The ingredient list is short, requiring only one piece of string and one honeycomb. Besides needing a crafting table, you’ll also have to find the equipment that will be needed to cut down your ingredients.
- Make Shears
Obtaining the materials to craft a candle is going to require shears. If you haven’t gotten shears yet, don’t worry, as they are easily crafted! Besides, the iron you’ll need to craft them can be found in caves, which happen to be where you have the best chance of finding a mineshaft covered in cobwebs. Since you’ll also need these, effective planning can help you make the most of your cave run.
Once you have raw iron, take it to a furnace to make two iron ingots, which you can then use to create shears! - Make a Sword
Shears will help you with honeycombs and will allow you to harvest cobwebs in some versions of the game. To ensure you can get string from cobwebs regardless of your version, go ahead and make a sword. This will be a useful tool to have for many purposes beyond this activity, so you’ll be ahead for the effort.
You have several options when it comes to choosing your material, such as wood or stone, for crafting your sword. They will all work for taking down cobwebs, so choose whichever you like. To craft a sword, place a stick below two separate blocks of the material you decide to use for crafting. You can place them anywhere in the grid, as long as they’re arranged with the two blocks above the one stick. Once you’ve made your sword, it’s time to head out and gather the ingredients to make a candle! - Find Cobwebs
Head to the nearest mineshaft you can find to search for cobwebs. Mineshafts can be identified by the minecart tracks on the ground and the characteristic support beams lining the walls and ceiling. Once you get to a mineshaft, you likely won’t have to look long to find cobwebs, which like to spawn dangling in the corners of the mineshaft supports. You may even find the jackpot with cobwebs so plentiful they’re crowding the walkway, but remember they slow you down if you have to walk through them!
Once you track down some cobwebs, you can pull out your sword to mine them. This will provide you with a piece of string for each cobweb harvested. Once you’ve got some string, you’re ready to find your next ingredient! Alternatively, you can hunt Spiders, which will drop String when they are killed. - Find Honeycombs
You obtain honeycombs from bee nests (wild) or beehives (crafted). You’ll likely need to start by finding one in the wild unless you already have one crafted, and they can be tricky to find. Bee nests are often found in forests attached to trees (especially birch or oak trees), so be sure to check in these areas first.
After you’re able to track down a bee nest, it’ll be time to decide on your approach. If you have the ability to make a campfire, then you can place one under the hive to pacify the bees as you retrieve the honeycomb with shears. You can also use a sword with the Silk Touch enchantment to harvest bee nests without upsetting the bees. No worries if you don’t have these items! You can still use your shears to cut down the honeycombs, but be prepared to fight some bees who’ll be angry about the disturbance! - Make a Candle
Now you’re as close as it gets to crafting a candle. Using a crafting table, place one piece of string and one honeycomb in the crafting grid. It’s critical that the string be placed directly above the honeycomb. They can be placed anywhere in the crafting grid where you can manage to place the string directly above the honeycomb. Once you arrange them correctly, you can behold your newly crafted candle! Now you can use it as a lighting source or customize it even further if you want.
- Make a Dyed Candle
The regular white candle is great and perfectly useful, but making dyed candles can really give your creations some flare! Since you can make dyed candles out of up to 16 different colors, you’re nearly boundless in how you can use them in your masterpieces.
To make a dyed candle, first follow the steps above to obtain a regular candle. You’ll also need to find some dye, so it’s time to pick the color you want. An easy way to make dyes is to grab some flowers and take them to a crafting table. Once you have dye, combine it with your candle in any arrangement in the crafting grid. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be presented with a candle in the same color as the dye you used!
