Minecraft is much about building, and when you are constructing your next project you might want to make things easier on yourself by creating a structure you can work from. This is known as scaffolding, which is a relatively new block that can be used as a framework to get around on when building. If you want to know how to create this useful block, we’ll walk you through the process in our easy to follow step-by-step guide.
Creating Scaffolding
Time needed: 5 minutes.
To make scaffolding in Minecraft, you will need to find bamboo. This resource only spawns in Jungle biomes, but can be grown quickly once found. Once you have your bamboo, combine six of them with a single string to create yourself some scaffolding!
- Find Bamboo
This is the most difficult step, because you might not be near a jungle biome. If not, you will need to explore around a bit. Tame a horse or grab an elytra and make your way around the map. While it would be nice to find a bamboo jungle, any jungle biome will spawn at least some bamboo. Once you’ve located a biome, just search around for at least a single growth of bamboo and harvest it. Bring it back to your base and grow it in some dirt. You will find that it can be farmed quite quickly due to it being the fastest growing plant in the game!
- Get String
String is fairly common, it can be found by killing spiders which you can find all over the map or at night when the mobs spawn in the dark. If you’re near a badlands biome, you can find a mine which will have plenty of cobwebs to break that will get you string. Mines also spawn elsewhere randomly, they are just more common in the badlands. Finally, you can also loot chests that will sometimes have string in them.
- Make Scaffolding
Now that you have all of the ingredient, you will just need to combine them together. Place three bamboo on both sides of your Crafting Table vertically, and then place one string at the top of the middle set of blocks. This will create six scaffolding that you can use!
Scaffolding Uses
Scaffolding allows you to climb through it easily by just holding the jump button to climb up. Each piece of scaffolding you place stacks onto itself. Which allows you to stack as high as you want all the way up to the top of the build limit. You can also easily deconstruct all of the scaffolding by breaking any part of it, which will destroy all of the scaffolding above it!

If you want to place scaffolding horizontally on another piece of scaffolding, you will need to press the sneak button when you attempt to place it. Otherwise, your scaffolding will just continue to grow in height!
