Using Mind Tricks In Lego Star Wars
To use your force mind control abilities, you will first need to switch to a character who has the power of the force. A good example is Obi-Wan or “Ben” Kenobi, the famous Jedi Knight and master of the force. When using a force-sensitive character like Obi-Wan, you will see a button prompt when approaching certain characters. Using this button will activate your Jedi Mind Tricks, effectively mind-controlling the target.
The “influence” option is the most useful. Influencing someone with the force gives you full control over the target for a short time. Controlling targets allows you to do incredibly useful things, such as unlocking gates, moving to unreachable objectives or even attacking the character’s nearby allies.
Make sure that you’re using a force-sensitive character, like Obi-Wan, or this prompt won’t be available. Only Jedi, Sith and other force-sensitive characters can access the powerful mind control abilities of the force.
Influence isn’t your only option for mind-controlling the various enemies in the Skywalker Saga, however. Depending on where you are in the game, you’ll have access to even more powerful abilities with your Jedi mind tricks ability. By approaching a character with a force-sensitive character, you’ll see the additional options to distract and panic the target.
Distracting the target will pull their attention away from their current focus, giving you the chance to sneak past them or get an easy takedown from behind. The panic option will send them into a hysteric frenzy, effectively neutralizing any threat they might have presented to you.
Force-sensitive characters have a unique advantage in the game world that other characters don’t have. By using your Jedi mind tricks, you can carefully influence the characters around you, avoiding a fight where it was otherwise unavoidable or gaining access to new or hidden locations that you wouldn’t have been able to reach from your own character’s perspective.

How do you actually activate because on the phantom menace it didn’t come up with anything except a glowing blue cloud
I am having the same problem. do not get any prompts at all, I see the cloud around their heads, but nothing else.

After much frustration – go into controller config in settings, see what force user (in green) mind trick (HOLD) has for button. the choices appear after you hold the button.
I must have expected I would get the hold prompt, as I was quick to move on in the tutorial.
